Building Awareness Through Collective Action

The year began with a landmark event in Bengaluru—“Navigating Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Together”, an awareness and advocacy program that brought together members of the MS community, caregivers, neurologists, Rotary leaders, and government representatives. The event served as a powerful platform for sharing experiences and pushing for stronger systemic support for those affected by MS.

RAGAMS has also continued its global engagement through initiatives like The May 50K, while supporting ongoing research such as the Jacob Taurins Memorial PhD Scholarship focused on identifying biomarkers for MS.

Policy Progress in Karnataka

A significant milestone emerged from advocacy efforts in India. With support from RAGAMS and the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India (MSSI), the Government of Karnataka acknowledged the need to include persons with MS in healthcare schemes.

The official communication (featured on page 3) outlines provisions under schemes like Ayushman Bharat and Suvarna Arogya Suraksha Trust, enabling access to medical and financial assistance for MS-related treatment.

This marks a critical step toward reducing the financial burden of treatment and improving accessibility to healthcare services.

Redefining Ability: Arun Mohan’s Inspiring Journey

A central highlight of this edition is the powerful story of Rtn. Arun Mohan—the first person with MS in India to become a Rotary Club President.

Diagnosed after years of misdiagnosis and physical challenges, Arun’s journey reflects resilience and transformation. From struggling with mobility and speech to becoming a wellness coach, he has dedicated his life to supporting others facing similar challenges.

His story sheds light on:

  • The emotional and physical toll of delayed diagnosis
  • The financial strain of treatment
  • The importance of empathy, listening, and community support

Through MSSI and RAGAMS, Arun found a platform to advocate, inspire, and break stereotypes—whether by modelling in awareness campaigns or participating in inclusive public events.

Leadership and Advocacy in Action

Arun’s contributions extend far beyond personal resilience. As an active member of MSSI and a leader in the Rotary community, he has:

  • Served on the MSSI governing council and as Vice President
  • Led the Rotary Club of Bengaluru Abilities as President
  • Championed accessibility and inclusion in public infrastructure

His advocacy has reached policymakers and institutions, even sparking conversations with national leaders on accessibility challenges faced by persons with disabilities.

A Continuing Mission for Inclusion

The newsletter closes with a powerful message: accessibility is not a privilege—it is a right. RAGAMS continues to emphasise inclusion, awareness, and systemic change as core to its mission.

With growing collaborations, research efforts, and advocacy wins, the movement is steadily advancing toward a more inclusive world for people living with MS.
